Custom R4 supercharged Avanti at the Muscle Car & Corvette Nationals in Rosemont, IL – Nov 2016
This was it’s first public debut – the car was awarded Gold in the Street Rod Division.
Studebaker Co. only production lined one R4 engine that was installed in a Daytona. Off site, the Granatelli Brothers produced approximately a dozen R4 Studebaker engines and about 150 R3 engines which were shipped back to the South Bend IN Stude plant to be installed in various types of Studebakers.
The engine in this Avanti was originally built by a private individual as a Granatelli tribute engine, but just didn’t have much “get off the line” power. I’ve upped the ante on this engine, powered it up with a new blower/custom pulley set-up and it now has power steering and AC. Yep – some engineering challenges to stuff all of this under the hood of an Avanti.
